Web Comic Review of the week for 05/23/2003
Hello my loyal fans, and welcome to all my newcomers. You know that your favorite Review God Shalmdi is always on the lookout for new comics, and last week I stumbled on a real gem. This weeks comic is PVP by Scott Kurtz. Kurtz takes an innovative look at the world of gaming and computers in this very unique Web Comic.
You know, I try to find at least one new comic every week, and last week I found PvP in the link page of one of my regulars. This comic focuses on an imaginary gaming magazine called PvP and the often insane characters that work there. Every day, Scott comes out with original situations to put his cast of crazy computer co-workers in, and it seems that every week he comes up with a new way to play his characters off each other. Despite the wide range of situations that they go through, the staff members of PvP magazine always stay true to their personalities, and that is a very important part of an active strip like this. PvP's hilarity is only matched by the way that Scott manages to work an occasional measure of seriousness into the mix.
Ok, now someone out there say, "That’s all good, Shalmdi, but what makes this comic different from any of the others we have seen?" Well that is a good question; originality is what makes a good comic great. To sum it up, Kurtz uses his comics in ways I have never really seen elsewhere. The characters occasionally (but not too often) act as if they know they are in a comic strip. And whenever he "breaks the fourth wall" (Scott's term for leaving the confines of comic strip reality), Kurtz comes up with hilarious new ways to use his characters. Now don't think that the PvP cast has to break the fourth wall to be insane. When your cast includes a giant purple troll, insanity is pretty much a requirement (Skull rules!).
So, with the hilarious and innovative ways that PvP changes the Web Comic world, what is its best attribute? It comes out every day!! Sure, occasionally Scott can't update every day, but even his fillers are usually worth reading. Any artist that makes the effort to update every day deserves a few exceptions to my "Shalmdi-hate-filler" rule.
You know, when I first began this review, I intended on giving PvP a 4.5 star review, for as near to perfection as you can get without being perfect. But when I began looking back on all the PvP episodes I read (finished all the archives in three days), I see that Kurtz's comic while not always the funniest I ever read was always interesting. Every time I had free time, I would read another few hundred comics, and I never resented having to read so many. PvP is original, it's funny, it's serious at times, it comes out every day, and it deserves a 5 star rating! I have to say, if you aren't reading PvP yet, then you have some catching up to do!
Site updates every day!!
PvP is rated TEEN for Language, Sexual Humor, and Mild Violence.
Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives PvP by Scott Kurtz

5 Energy Stars! A God's Choice Comic!
