Web Comic Review for 06/06/2003
Welcome back my loyal readers, and hello to all newcomers. It’s that time again. Time to take over the world! No...wait...that’s not right. Oh yeah, its time for another Web Comic review by your beloved god, Shalmdi. Yah! I have a real treat for all the gamers in the audience. Today’s comic is the video game parody RPG World by Ian Johnson. Warning: This comic is for RPG fans and those familiar with RPG's. Other people will not get the jokes.
Welcome to the video game "RPG world." Wait, I thought this was a comic? It is, but it is presented from the point of view of Hero (Hey, I had a character named that!). Hero is the leader of a team of stereotypical RPG adventurers through an incredibly stereotypical RPG adventure. Johnson uses his comic to mock every aspect of the old style RPG's, and he does a hilarious job of it! The story has a great plot, and it points out all the things about old RPG's that I never understood via. Cherry, one of Hero's teammates, that seems to have the uncanny ability to see everything wrong with their video game world. Ian's cast of adventurers each adds their own element to the team while managing to capture different elements of the video game world. Personally, I am completely in love with this comic. I think they should make a game based on Hero and his team using every thing from Hero's strict observance of RPG rules to Cherry's completely obsessive habit of pointing out everything that doesn't make sense!
Well, as always, its time to talk about the problems with the RPG world. As I mentioned before, if you are not a video game fan and you have never played an RPG, these jokes just won't be all that funny to you. Also, this is not one of those comics that you can just come into half way. You really won't get the full effect of this comic unless you start from the beginning and work your way to the present. I have the dedication for something like that, but most people can't boast the patience of a god :-D. However, despite this, RPG World still wouldn’t lose but half a star for both of these things. The main problem with RPG world is its repetitive nature. Yes, the comic is extremely funny, but some of these jokes we just see coming. I believe that I gave away the punch line to a good portion of the strips just by telling my readers that Cherry doesn't get it!
Ah well, I believe I may have been more critical with this comic than I intended to be. Please, if you have the time to read some back-comics, or if you are a big fan of RPG's (specifically old school RPG's) then RPG World is a must read. It is one of my regular comics, and I find my self waiting anxiously to see what problems our "Hero" and his friends will get into next. If whoever is playing this game/comic (I assume it is Ian) ever beats the game, I hope that he buys the sequel, so that I and others like me can continue enjoying this comic for years to come.
Site update are on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives RPG World by Ian Johnson

Comments From the Other Gods:
Heh, after I posted a message on the RPG World forums stating that we had reviewed the comic, a bunch of fanatical readers (much like Shalmdi with 8-Bit Theatre *whistles*) pretty much board-jumped me. They seem to think you're wrong about this Ian guy's last name being Johnson. Hey, Shalmdi is a god! If he says the sky is freakin' red and white pinstriped, well, then it is. Anyway, I pretty much agree with the review. I did enjoy the first slew of comics, but after awhile, they start to tire one a bit. There are only so many old RPG cliches. Ok, well that's my view. And since I am a God, it's obviously correct! Sorry about that one. I am just a little annoyed. Oh, and just so everyone knows, we aren't delusional or anything. I just like to pretend I am an actual god and exert my might once in a while. BWAHAHAHA!!! (insert lightning strike and thunder clap)
