Web Comic Review for 07/11/2003
Hello mortal readers! Shalmdi is back! Yes, if you have been loyal to me this last month, then you are aware that I have been on "godly business" since the beginning of June, and have been unable to post a real review since then. I apologize for this, and I hope that someone out there missed me other than my dog (yes, gods have pets too). Well, I will make this up by throwing out as many reviews in the next month as I a can, but I can't promise that they will all be web comics. THE INVASION IS COMING! What? I didn't say anything. Ok, enough useless babble about me; it's time for useless babble about today’s web comic. The review this week is about Wigu [daily comic series] by Jeffrey Roland. Insanity! More insanity! Wow, when a comic is this crazy, I usually like it more.
Yes, Wigu. An insane world of kids, hippies, and flying potatoes. Wigu focuses around the Tinkle family (Yes, I said Tinkle). The Tinkles consist of Mom and Dad Tinkle, a couple of freakishly irresponsible perverts that only stay married because of sex (though they both spend time flirting with others); Paisley Tinkle, a Goth teenager that actually keeps these insane people from all dying in puddles if their own drool and/or vomit (I firmly stand by that statement); Wigu tinkle, a little kid with an imaginary friend that actually does exist and beats up Wigu's dad one night (Go figure); and Wigu's "imaginary" friends Topato Potato and Sheriff Pony. I don't even want to talk about those last two, and I am supposed to be the unbalanced god.
As usual, I like to start things off with the good news. This comic updates 5 days a week. Always a big plus in my book. Also, there are very few times when Roland is unable to post on schedule. Combine that with a complete lack of my arch-nemesis The Filler Strip, and you have a recipe for a great comic. When you start a comic with that kind of technical background, much slack can be cut for you my friend. On a story note, Wigu is one of the most original and innovative comic strips out there. Any person that tells you they know what is going to happen next either is a psychic, has inside information, or is a liar. I would bet on the third option there by the way.
Ah, but with every bit of good news there must also be bad news. I warn you all now that I do not like this comic. The only reason I would even read a comic like this is because Cool Hands Luke recommended this. Yes, this is one of his favorites, and he is going to put some seriously nasty comments about this review. Sorry Cool Hands, but I just can't lie to my readers. Yes, friends, this comic stinks, and I will tell you why. There aren't any real jokes just a couple of mild chuckle-at-them comments (read a few strips and you will see what I mean). The child like atmosphere of Wigu Tinkle's world tries to reach out to the very young, but it doesn't do a very good job since the jokes are a bit to difficult for the average child to get. The teenage aspect provided by Paisley Tinkle is just dull. I can't name an actual joke from her sections (if you can remember one, please e-mail me). Mom and Dad Tinkle need to be shot. Their constant perverted behavior ups the Censor Rating for the comic, but it fails to add anything to it. And for those of you out there that like a little perversion, there isn't enough of it to say the comic is actually sexual in nature. Mild references are the best you’re going to get.
Wigu tries to appeal to many audiences, but in the end, it fails to appeal to any. I may be alone in this, but I can't see how this comic has managed to draw any kind of following. If Mr. Rolland should ever happen to read this, I must say this. If you ever start another comic, I will read some of it at least. Wigu could only be the brainchild of a creative mind, but creativity is all that it has. I give points for consistency and originality, but that won't be enough to keep me reading. Now that this review is out, I will take this comic off my favorites list. I am sorry Jeffrey, but I promise to check up on your site in hopes that you will one day get this comic on track.
Site updates are Monday through Friday.
Wigu [daily comic series] is rated TEEN for Mild Language, Sexual Humor, and Adult Themes.
Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives Wigu [daily comic series] by Jeffrey Roland
Comments From the Other Gods:
I think this comic is a breath of fresh air when it comes to webcomics. Everything about this webcomic is different from the other web-strips out there. The main character is a child. There is no cursing. There are no references to games or anime, ever. Wigu's humor is so unconventional, I'm surprised that Shalmdi didn't get it. Jeffrey realizes that you don't have to be rolling on the ground to be entertained by a comic strip. The entertainment is simply the bewilderment of the Tinkles as they try to deal with the preposterous situations around them. As for the audience this comic aims for, I'd say it's one of the most narrow of any webcomic, because not only are the references way too far above any child's head, but one has to be quite well versed in just about every aspect of obscure pop-culture there is. If one word could define this comic, it's "subtle." So, get your head out of the box and give Wigu a try.
