Web Comic Review for 07/18/2003
Hello my loyal readers and welcome to all newcomers! It's that time now folks, and I, Shalmdi, am ready to amaze you with my stupendous review of a fantastic piece of literary art! Oh...wait...no, it's just my usual rant over some Web Comic that I like. Sorry. Oh well, let's get down to business with Elf Life by Carson Fire! A tale of elves and ogres and goblins and dragons and mermaids and...you get the point.
Let me get things started by giving you a quick summary of Elf Life. Be prepared for elf-insanity! Well, that sums it up. What? You want more? Ok, well it's kind of like this: Baughb(Pronounce it Bob) is a time-traveling-legendary-master-fighter-kind-of-crazy elf. He is trying to save all of elf-kind by preventing a final event that will destroy the world as he knows it and leave nothing behind but humans (Based on the fact that elves aren't around any more, I'm thinking he fails). In the process, he makes friends with the elf maiden Filis, half-ogre Airek, insane fairy Glee, and the other mythical inhabitants of this strange magic-torn world. A warning to all those that are familiar with my usually light natured comics: despite the insanity of it all, Elf Life can be a very serious story. There have been times when I had to keep reading in hopes that things would get better, and if Mr. Fire is reading this, I am still waiting for things to get better. If you read the strip, then you know what I mean.
I have been reading Elf Life for some time now, and I have learned one important thing from this fractured fairytale. Carson is a literary genius. Elf Life is written with the kind of professionalism and in-depth plot lines that make any story worth reading. When the story is light hearted, you can?t help but smile for Carson's little elves. When the story is adventurous, you can?t help but be at the edge of your seat in expectation of action. There have been times when I have actually been depressed when things took a turn for the worst. With so many things going wrong for Baughb and Fillis, I am having trouble finding a happy path for my favorite mystical creatures. Will this "Once upon a time..." have a happily ever after?
That was the upside; now for the downside. I don't consider the serious nature of this comic a downside, but it does have its flaws. On average, the web comic itself goes about a week without an update for every comic that Carson posts. Recently, the site was working on its new look, and Elf Life went without a comic update for close to one month. I think the new site looks good, but even the better interface does not make up for the fact that loyal Elf Life fans like yours truly were left without their comics for a month. Also, there are times when the strip switches from a typical web comic to a text-based storyline. This is great to get the story moving faster, and I realize that writing these pages can be very time consuming. However, these storyline-strips are still nothing more than an excuse for Mr. Fire to go longer without posting an actual comic. The unreliable nature of this comic is one of its greatest flaws.
My one other problem with this site will not lower its rating, but it does lower my opinion of the site a little. The Adult Swim section needs to be finished. I was happy when it was first removed from the site, but I noticed that an "Adult" option made a reoccurrence a few days ago in about the second "Erf" comic. Please Carson, on behalf of all your readers that have a margin of good taste, I ask you to let the adult section die out. Don't worry, I am going to give you some points just for your name (say it out loud if you haven't figured it out).
Site update are randomn.
Elf Life is rated M for Adult Themes and Nudity(Adult Section Only).
Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives Elf Life by Carson Fire
