Web Comic Review for 08/08/2003
Greetings my loyal readers and all those that are joing me for the first time. Once again, I have transcended to this mortal medium to bless your lives with my divine insight on your human attempts at entertainment. Sorry about that; I had to be flowery today. Hope I didn't scare ya too much. Seriously though, I have a very different and very entertaining web comic for you today. The Web Comic review of the day is over Flight of the Stingray by Brian Freeman. This one barely counts as a web comic, but we won't hold that one against it.

Flight of the Stingray is not a typical web comic. It is actually a graphic novel (don't worry, I'll tell what that is) based on a story written by the artist, Brian Freeman. This means that you don't have to check this site for updates every day, but after the initial story, don't expect any updates. Just like a real novel, Flight of the Stingray has a beginning, an obvious plot (with a few twists and turns), and an unmistakable ending. I have trouble seeing a sequel to this one. If you still don't understand, imagine a comic book about sixty pages long and you have "Flight." Don't let the size discourage you. If that's too much just read it one day at a time like a web comic and pretend that it ends after two months. Weird? Yes, but when it's a comic on the web, it is a "Web Comic," and this one makes me wish it did update every day.

Here are all the good things you need to know. This story follows the testing of this very smooth looking plan/submarine called the Stingray and its two pilots, Dirk and Jack. While testing these new experimental crafts, Dirk disappears. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will tell you that it gets weird from that point on. What gives these comic points in my book? Imagination, art, and plot. The places, vehicles, and creatures the Freeman describes in this story are incredibly original and well thought out. It is obvious to anyone that Brian knows what he is talking about when he gets technical or is really good at making things up. I'll let you figure out which one it is. I was especially impressed with the ideas behind Norhaven; it is such a detailed and imaginative place. A lot of thought had to go into something like that. Also, time is the only thing that could have produced the artwork in Stingray. The way Brian mixes 3D backgrounds with 2D images adds an original edge to his comics that helps you to really see and visit places he has invented in that creative (and probably very strange) mind of his. Flight of the stingray is not really typical of the other comics I review. It doesn't update, and it is not really funny or action packed. If you have a taste for a good story though, this might just be what you're looking for. When you combine this kind of art with the in depth and creative world that is Flight of the Stingray, you have a story that is both original and entertaining. What more does any comic need?

Well, are you ready for the bad things about this comic/story? Don't worry, it won't take long to go over the bad in a work like this. I would have to say the most crippling factor of this comic, is the load time. I have broadband, and it still takes time for me to load these images. The incredible art in Flight leads to incredible download sizes. If you are going to read this one, you will have to have patience. Also, the web site layout is very odd, and I feel that the simple yet annoying layout will scare off many would be readers. Why does the comic have to load in a window that can't be maximized? Why not just let it load in the same window? Complicating things will never win ya readers. Ok, that’s it for the bad. If you can over look these two points, you will probably enjoy Flight of the Stingray, but if you never give it a chance, you will never know. Suffer through the load times. You may find that you like it. If you don't like it, you are narrow minded and I hate you...no wait...um, I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yeah, that’s what I meant. Right...
Site update are on non exsistent.
Flight of the Stingray is rated PG for Mild Violence.
