Web Comic Review for 08/15/2003
Hello my loyal readers and welcome to all you newcomers. It falls on me once again to bring you a little insight into the world of Web Comics. The comic to review this week is Mixed Myth by Robin (No idea on the last name). Ahhh...fantasy, mythology, jokes at the expense of elves...what more could you want?
Mixed Myth is a fantasy tale following the adventures of Keeva, a half-goblin half-elf that seems to have an obsession with explosives (Yah Keeva!) and a knack for attracting trouble. Of course, if she didn't attract some kind of adventure there wouldn't be much of a plot; I guess being troublesome has its advantages. Joining Keeva is a pack of mythological misfits that would put their ancient counterparts to shame. If you have ever wanted to read about a talking horse that stays drunk (he can't think when he's sober) and a sphinx that forgets the answer to its riddle (among other things), then Mixed Myth is defiantly a must read. Robin takes pieces of mythology and fantasy, and se mixes them with her own blend of imagination to come up with some ideas that you have never heard of before. Did you know that phoenix eggs are like little hand grenades? Best part about this web comic? Elves are the bad guys!!! That will teach those stuck up little forest dwellers. I get sick of those things.
Mixed Myth is an incredibly innovative story, and some of Robin's ideas are just hilarious. She makes fun of most mythologies and every Tolkien-esque fantasy tale I have ever read. Also, she makes fun of the stories and the writers themselves. Where do exciting-back-ground-story-revealing-things happen? At a "Plot Point" of course. Why do elves and other creatures wear such outlandish outfits and makeup? To build up "Cynimatiks" and increase their power. Beware the Plot Holes, and hope that you are not an extra (they don't last long). This is good stuff. Most web comics make fun of something, but Mixed Myth manages to make fun of so much is so many innovative ways. Also, the artwork (which is mostly hand drawn) is very nice. While not spectacularly original, Robin is a very talented artist, and at this point, I really could not imagine this comic being drawn any differently. Artwork, originality, and storyline; that is Shalmdi's recipe for a good web comic.
Well, enough niceties. Time to get mean. While Mixed Myth has a very good art style, it is possible to over do it. The artwork is nice, but the artistic lettering is very aggravating. Whenever a character with an accent talks, the letters are done in such an artistic fashion that they become difficult or even impossible to decipher. If you combine that with the too frequent misspellings (although Robin has been good about that lately), you have a comic that is more fun to look at than read, and that is not very fun. The plotline of Mixed Myth can be confusing enough on its own. It doesn't need difficult text to make matters worse. That’s not too bad, but unfortunately, there is more. Mixed Myth does not update on any regular basis, and the updates can be very spread out. Some weeks, there are four or more updates, but some weeks there is only one. This kind of unreliability is not a real point-winner when you consider how little actually goes in some of the strips. It can take months to finish one scene. I really hope that time will be kinder to the artist so that she can develop a more regular schedule. Finally, and this is more of a warning then a bad point, while you could just come into the strip at any time, this web comic can be every confusing, and if you don't want to take the time to go back over the archives you may not be able to follow the story so far. I recommend that you read two or three of the archives each day (it won't take more than five minutes) until you catch up with the regular story. Or you can be like me and obsessively read as many comics each day as you can and end up reading about three years of comics in two days. You should probably avoid that; it gives you weird dreams.
While, Mixed Myth is not the best Web Comic I have ever read, it is certainly one of the good ones. There are a few problems, but they could easily be fixed. I will continue to read this comic regularly, and I hope to see more good from Robin and her little goblin Keeva. Well, I managed to review this comic with out giving any spoilers...yup, no spoilers...none whatsoever.......ELVES DESCENDED FROM BUNNIES!! So close. See ya.
Site updates are Random.
Mixed Myth is rated TEEN for Mild Violence and Adult Humor.
Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives Mixed Myth by Robin
