Web Comic Review for 09/05/2003
Hello my loyal readers (I think I have a few) and hello to all my newcomers. It is time once again for my weekly review of some comic that you may enjoy. I would post reviews more often, but weekly reviews are best done every seven days. I know, bad joke, but I had to say it. The web comic to read this week is Mixed Views by Jim Middleton. Not a fan of my typical comics? If not, then this blast from the Farside past may be just what you need to turn you in to a comic junky just like me.

Ahh, Farside. Does everyone out there in Web Comic Land remember that gem? Yes, Farside has been gone for many years, but it is not forgotten. There have been books, calendars, t-shirts, and many, many imitators. Mixed Views is yet another comic that wishes to fill the void left by that legendary strip. Mixed Views seems to follow random characters in random situations. Unlike most web comics that require you to read many pages before you can possibly understand the storyline, Jim's one square comic requires you to just read today’s strip, and you will get the jokes. There is no story, so that will be easy on those of you that don't want to get involved in long drawn out stories. After the many plots that I have been drawn into, it is nice just to enjoy a little randomness once in a while. The only repeating character I have even seen in this is Little Billy. This kid is dummmmmmb! I like that in my cartoon characters.

Plus sides of this comic? It is funny, and it updates a lot. Downsides? It isn't original. Like I said, this a Farside knock-off. I like originality in my comics, and Mixed Views just doesn’t present it. The jokes are original, but the layout itself has been done to death. This comic is great for those people just looking for a quick laugh, but it really would work better in a newspaper environment with a lot of other jokes to draw in readers. It would be great if there was something like an online newspaper that contained comics like Mixed Views, but I have never seen anything like that. If you like Middleton’s little strip, I would defiantly recommend you read the comics in your local newspaper or in thee online papers (Check out my review for King Features). They come out daily, on Sunday you get a big color one, and there are a lot of them. I am not saying this is a bad strip, I am just saying that it doesn't stand alone well.

Mixed Views is a good strip. It is humorous and it comes out regularly. However, until Mixed Views has more to bring me in than just this one strip, I will read it casually if I read it at all. My best recommendation to you, Jim, is get some partners and get some more comics. If you do this, send me an E-mail. I would love to see a collection of your comics presented in a newspaper format, or maybe, with time, in a real newspaper.

Site updates are Everyday except Sunday.
Mixed Views is rated TEEN for Adult Humor and Mild Violence.
