**HEY! READ THIS FIRST!**
Just a little notice. I got an e-mail from the Secret Monkey gang, and it seems I got a couple of things wrong about the stuff they parodied in the comic. It seems they have never seen Farscape (A shame actually, good sci-fi), and they got the "Hacker" line from a T-shirt. I still got a lot of others right, but I did miss a few. I can't believe I didn't catch a Transformers reference and a G.I. Joe reference! I am ashamed. I am going to have to read the comics again. Oh well, see ya!

Web Comic Review for 05/07/2003
Welcome back my loyal readers and hello to all you newcomers. It is time once again for I, Shalmdi, to delve into the world of web comics, and return with a comic for your entertainment. The comic to read this week, is Secret Monkey by John Hunt and Matt Dursin. Yes, I AM reviewing a comic called Secret Monkey, and yes, I did use the word entertainment. Secret Monkey (or SM as he is called by his fans) is both stupid and entertaining, and that is always a winning combination.

The Secret Monkey follows the life of our hero, The Secret Monkey. This paper bag wearing monkey-man is a great comedy super hero. Think Spider Man with a little more insanity. This super-hero-simian (big word!) was shot back through time (against his will) with some evil aliens that intended on conquering earth while it was still week and defenseless (before monkeys and man co-existed on Earth). This just happens to be in the late forties in a town called Roswell. Yeah, that explains all that stuff. As far as I can tell, SM's powers consist of speed, strength, and agility. There have been some hints to a "Monkey-sense" that gives him warnings about bad stuff (yes, I know it is a rip-off but don't get ahead of me), but other than that, he is pretty normal. Well, normal for a monkey from the distant future that is. Confused? Don't feel bad, I confused myself just talking about. The think I don't understand is how Nurgil can be his own grandfather...Oh, never mind, I don't want to spoil anything for you.

Hunt and Dursin's little comic is quite the oddity on the net. It looks and updates much like a real world comic book, but you will have a hard time finding most of the issues in hard print. Personally, I think this style of comic book is to scarce on the net. This is the kind of comic book that I and most other people grew up on, and I am glad to see that some people appreciate the classic formats. I do wish that SM was a bit more serious, but making a comic about a monkey super hero can only be serious to a certain extent.

I personally can't find any major faults in SM. The comic itself has some very corny jokes and is basically on long parody, but that is what the creators were going for in the first place (I think). I tried to find something wrong with this comic, but I have to say it is very good. It isn't great. I don't think I will find myself drooling for the next SM issue, but I certainly will read it. One more thing, Secret Monkey does rip-off a lot of other things. I made a short list of the ones I caught. See if you can find any that I missed and enjoy this bizarre, strange, and weird web comic.

Things SM Ripped Off
Farscape (Worm Hole Creation Method)
Spiderman ("friendly neighborhood", his moves)
Nick Fury & SHIELD (well kinda with SQUAD)
3 Ninjas (and the sequel)
Loony Toons (in general)
Star Wars: Phantom Menace (The title)
Spawn's Mask
Planet of the Apes (Heston's lines)
The Hulk (The Gargantuan Man and his buddy)
Star Wars (Jedi)
Iron Man (and most of the Avengers)
Dr. Doom
The Hall of Justice (Exact Image!)
Hackers (“Mess with the best...” I love that line!)
Site updates are Once a Month
Secret Monkey is rated TEEN for Mild Violence and Mild Sexual Humor.
