Web Comic Review for 09/19/2003
Welcome back my loyal readers and hello to all you newcomers! I have been putting this one off for sometime, but it is finally time. This week, I will be reviewing a legend of the Web Comic World; the comic that is solely responsible for the creation of thousands of web comic fans. I am of course talking about the 1337 masterpiece that is Megatokyo by Fred Gallagher. Hey, what can I say? This comic is the sole reason that I actually took the time to learn 1337. 7|-|43 |233[y |)|_|3 |_|/\/|]4$74n|] j00.
While most of you web heads know all about Megatokyo. Some of you could probably even teach me a few things (...NAH!), but for those of you who aren't familiar, I will try to give you some idea of what you are missing out on. Megatokyo is the story of Largo and Piro. These two are just a couple of friends looking to have a little fun. Basically, they are a couple of web head gamers like me and some of you out there, with a few minor exceptions. They moved to Tokyo and then spent so much money they can't go back home; they live with a female android PS2 accessory named "Ping" (none H model you perv's); Largo fights zombies, monsters, school girls, and any thing else that he deems 3V1L, they have friends like Dom and Ed that have access to weapons and arsenals that these psychos just shouldn't have access to (It took them three attempts to get to Tokyo because there ships kept sinking); Piro has a guardian angel named Seraphim that acts as his conscience when she isn't trying to get the home office to send her some better equipment; Largo's conscience is a hamster named Boo (yes, that Boo); and a half dozen other oddities that I couldn't even begin to name. Does that help you understand the comic any better? No? That is as much as I can tell you, so you are just going to have read the comic to find out how all the insanity fits together.
Gallagher's creation sets the stage for all comics that come before it, and it sets a high bar to be met. Megatokyo's artwork is based on the Japanese mangas that are becoming popular as of late. The foreign, black and white look gives this comic and original feel that has been imitated by many other comics. Personally, I would enjoy some occasional color, but it would be very difficult for the artist. I would never want Fred to do anything that would keep him from being able to update as often. However, artwork is only one important factor. Good drawings would be nothing without good storyline, and once again, Megatokyo delivers greatness. If you are going to read Megatokyo, you have to read almost every back issue to make sure you understand the plot. Things can change drastically in just a few pages, or the comic can go on for months without changing at all. The storyline is both intricate and mysterious. I have been reading for so long, but there are so many things that I still don't understand. I want to warn all you casual readers to avoid Megatokyo at all costs. And with three comics a week, Megatokyo has the power to suck you in and hold you in its manga-like grasp. I can't even imagine going without my Megatokyo fix. Is there a support group for this comic? Not that I want to quit; I just like the thought of a group called Megatokyo Addicts Anonymous (MAA?).
Megatokyo is a comic is a well drawn comic with a great plot that updates several times a week. So what is wrong with the comic? I am going to get shot for saying this, but Megatokyo is not perfect. It has one major flaw; a flaw that has killed comics in the past but will only wound Megatokyo. Yes my dear readers, I mean the dreaded Filler Strip! It has been a while since I have said it, but "Shalmdi hate Filler!" Sometimes, it seems that Megatokyo can't go two weeks without throwing some junky filler strip that has nothing or very little to do with the marvelous story that keeps me coming back to this site. I have to give him credit; as of this review, Fred has gone almost a full month without even one Filler. However, he has a habit of teasing us with stuff like this (month o' comics) and following it with several fillers in a row. Don't get me wrong. The Fillers are usually good stuff, but when you get as wrapped up in plots as I do, going a week without a true update is like going a week without my favorite beverage (SoBe - nectar of the gods! Yah!).
I won't ask for forgiveness for my opinions, and no amount of hate mail will make me change my mind (Gee, isn't it funny how "you suck" letters never seem to win people over). I love Megatokyo, but until the day comes when I can click on this comic without the ever present fear of those "Shirt Guy Dom"(I hate those) or "Dead Piro Art Days" (Hate those a little less) fillers, I will never amend this review! So there :-P.
NOTE TO THE AUTHOR: For the love of God man, who/what is this Tohya? Vampire?! Undead?!? Just a really freaky high school girl?!?! 3Y3 /\/\|_|57 |\|()!!!1 Thanks
