Web Comic Review for 10/03/2003
Greetings my readers. Are you ready for another review of a comic masterpiece from a master of both the literary and the artistic? No? Well then how about another piece of trash about some comic that I spent way too much of my time reading? No? Well tough 'cuz that's what you get! No seriously, today’s review is over one of my favorite web comics. Today’s review is over Wish³ by Sylvia T. Leung. This is another of those forms that I have dubbed Web Comic Books (updates are far apart and it usually follows book forms). This comic requires "godly" patience, but the rewards are "heavenly." Sorry, but I love that pun :-D

Wish³, set in modern day California (I bet they are voting for Arnold!), is the tale of Basil Toback; "the third son of a third son." If you are familiar with any fantasy stories, you must realize that having a title like that is important. Basil's heritage has left him with the mysterious gift of wishing. Upon the day of his eighteenth birthday, Basil was presented three wishes, but his wishes come at a much higher cost than Aladdin’s. Once the third wish is made, something terrible will happen to our hero. It is now the task of Basil and his best friend Paige to find someway around this curse. With the help of Himitsu the fox spirit and Basil's brother Gabriel, Basil hopes that he can end the curse on his family and somehow save himself from the terrible fate that has befallen so many generations of wishers before him.

Sylvia has chosen to draw her comic in the form of a Japanese manga. If you recognize this style, you have probably been reading Megatokyo or some of its many imitators. I personally love the anime forms of her comic. I think that the black and white style gives the comic a more magical form, but it is easier to make things look good in black and white as well. The artwork is certainly well done if not overly original, but what artwork is completely new? The plotline of Wish³ is incredible. The storyline is unlike anything that I am familiar with, and Sylvia has created characters that are in-depth and seem real. It is not hard to be drawn in by Basil's plight. I have read classic novels (yes, I do read some things other than web comics) that don't have the kind of character development that this comic has. I could definitely see this become a popular graphic novel if it ever makes it to print. Finally, the use of true Japanese elements gives Wish³ an authentic air. If I had not read her bio, I would have sworn that Ms. Leung was Japanese herself. I can't even imagine the kind of creativity that could birth this epic story (ooh, that line sounded really impressive!).

Well, this is the part I didn't even want to go into: the bad news. Wish³ is a well-drawn, well-written comic, but the price of quality is time. For every update to this comic, weeks go by without a page of art. Because the artist is trying to paten all her work (an admirable and professional decision), the comic only updates when one full book is complete. When you consider that it takes about three to four months for Sylvia a write a full book, you realize that this comic can go a very long time without a comic update. While Sylvia does make an effort to post news updates and other morsels to tide over her comic-hungry fans base, nothing can make up for a comic update. I would love for this comic to update more frequently, but I fell that this request will never be meet.

After all is said, this is till a great comic. If you have the patience for it, I believe that you will find Wish³ to be an exciting drama that will keep you checking back for updates. Put it on your calendar, and pray for an update.

TIME BETWEEN UPDATES = 3-4 MONTHS
HOW OFTEN I CHECK FOR UPDATES = EVERY DAY
Sad, isn't it?

Site updates are "Few and Far Between"
Wish³ is rated TEEN for Violence and Language.
