Web Comic Review for 10/10/2003
Welcome back my readers and hello to all you newcomers. The time has come for a comic review, and here is just such a review. The web comic of the week is Matt and Theo by Jeff Mumm. This web comic is a master of mediocrity, and if you don't know what mediocrity is, it's not a compliment.
Matt and Theo is the story of two roommates that live with a talking turtle. That's right my friends; two guys and a turtle. Original isn't it? That was sarcasm if you weren't sure. The plot line of this comic is...wait, it is nonexistent. Theo is an independently wealthy character (he won the lottery) with no background or apparent interests. HE is the straight man of the comic. Matt is insane and has no apparent interests. I don't know how he keeps from working, and he doesn't seem to have a background either. Dwayne is a talking turtle. That seems to be everything you need to know about this comic. There are no other main characters, and there is no known connection between these characters. The artwork on this comic is less two dimensional that the plot!
Ok, well as we all know, good art and good jokes can make up for any lacking plot in a web comic. One problem, the artwork is dull and the jokes are stale. I can't think of one instance where this comic has made me laugh, and I am not that difficult an audience. Wacky characters do not a comic make. The artwork of this site is nothing special either. They site is not poorly drawn (it's better than anything I could do), but it just doesn't have a very unique or difficult air about it. I am not sure if this comic could be saved; I would just trash it and do something else. You want to go play cards Jeff?
Seriously though, I hate to be harsh on a comic, but Matt and Theo just isn't winning any points with me. It doesn't even seem to update regularly. If I were the artist, I would work on getting better and more original gags. Also, you need to give your characters a little more depth and personality. Finally, set an update schedule and stick to it. I know that it is difficult to make changes to an established comic, but sometimes changes need to be made
Site updates are random.
Matt and Theo is rated PG.
Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives Matt and Theo by Jeff Mumm
