Web Comic Review for 10/17/2003
Welcome back my readers and hello to all you newcomers. It is time once again for me, Shalmdi, to treat you with a little more my insight into the world of web comics. The web comic to read this week is 9th Elsewhere by Caroline Curtis and Courtney Caryl. Mmmm...Tastes like manga with just a dash of something out of a Merry Melodies cartoon (Be warned, I plan on making several stupid cooking jokes). No, not this new stuff on the big screen; I am talking old-school Porky Pig and the last of the Dodos. If you have no idea what I am talking about, I basically said that this comic can get a bit weird.
9th Elsewhere is the story of Eijii and Carmen. Two very different characters brought together to help each other out. Carmen is an orphan sixteen year old girl that tends to be very melancholy. She has been passed from one foster home to another since childhood (Shalmdi is sad). She is an aspiring author, but she seems to be at a loss for inspiration. That inspiration is where Eijii comes in. Eijii is a half-demon, half-muse that works for ORMY! (Organized Response Musing Yes!). Eijii is very happy and energetic, but this tends to make him more than slightly eccentric (that’s a big word for crazy) and incredibly irresponsible. I told you they were very different. Eijii's job is to help inspire Carmen, and if he fails another mission, he is going to be kicked out of ORMY! for good (His superiors would be very happy about that). Carmen is greatly uninspired, and Eijii may be her only hope of coming out of her slump. If these two don't help each other, Carmen may sink into a horrible depression, and Eijii will be in very hot water. No, really; apparently his boss has a recipe for "Eijii Soup" that sounds delicious (Shalmdi licks his lips).
My favorite part about this comic is the storyline. I can't imagine what minds came up with this artful and utterly bizarre storyline, but I think they may be as crazy as me...Nah. While Eijii's personality is rather open and obvious to any reader, Carmen's personality is only truly portrayed by her dream world. The entire dreamscape of 9th Elsewhere is a journey into Carmen's psyche, and I think this girl has some serious issues. The "Japanese manga" art style is becoming rather common on the net these days, but 9th Elsewhere is still a very well drawn comic even if it isn't very original. Any reader can take one look at this comic and realize that Carrie (the artist) puts a lot of effort into each page. The artwork of 9th Elsewhere may not win any awards, but putting time and effort into your art never fails to improve a comic.
The hardest thing about reviewing this comic was trying to find something wrong with it. Other than the once-a-week update schedule, 9th Elsewhere is a great comic. The plotlines are well written and unique, and the main characters are well defined and very realistic (well, as realistic as a muse/demon can be). In the end, 9th Elsewhere is a bizarre and entertaining comic with just a pinch of drama mixed in. That’s a good web comic recipe; almost as good as that Eijii Soup recipe. Ok, what do I put in after the potatoes, and where can I find an "Eijii?"
Site updates are on Monday.
9th Elsewhere is rated PG.
Out of 5 Energy Stars, Shalmdi gives 9th Elsewhere by Caroline Curtis and
