Web Comic Review for 11/28/2003
Welcome back my loyal reads and hello to all you newcomers. This weeks comic spotlight falls upon Cinerama by David Grelck and Andy Susag. Ahhh, comic hilarity and DVD's. That about sums up this comic, but I have to say more or else people get all fussy.
Cinerama is the story of two movie-obsessed roommates, Dave and Andy. I say they are "obsessed" with movies because I cannot think of a more extreme word for how much these guys love movies. I don't know what these guys did for a living before they bought a run down drive in movie, but I think they spent all their money on DVD's and TV accessories. Personally, I would love to live with these guys because of their entertainment center, but they have enough problems already and enough people living in that house already. Besides Dave and Andy, the Cinerama gang includes Andrea, Dave's wife. I personally have no idea how either of these guys have even dated; he must have meet her at a movie theatre. The other two members of the Cinerama gang, Ardella and Mike, are pretty much a mystery. Unless you read the "Cast" section, you won't know much about these two. Between possessed cars and evil DVD's (Night of the Living Dead reworked version), these guys are just one step away from fighting Lord Hades himself. Watch his teeth, he fights dirty.
The pro's of this comic aren't exactly obvious. The artwork is unique, but not overly involved or time consuming. The comic itself is amusing, but I can't think of any gags that had me laughing out loud. When it comes down to it, the plotline is about the only redeeming factor. Some of the ideas these guys come up with are incredible. Coming up with stuff like these five days a week is quite an accomplishment, but I don't really think it is enough.
Grelck and Susag are two very creative artists, and their art style is unique. However, you can't have a comedy based web comic without heavy doses of comedy, and Cinerama just doesn't quite deliver. My best advice to the artists here is less comic. I know, I feel dirty for saying it, but I think that you guys could probably come up with better work if you shifted to a three-per-week schedule. I hope that we can all see good things in this comic's future.
Site updates are Monday - Friday.
Cinerama is rated TEEN for Adult Situations.
