Review for 05/12/03 - JNes (NES Emulator)

Ah, the world of emulation. Such a volatile world filled with bliss, illegality, and at times, frustration. Personally, I think it's great BAD. There is no better way to experience the classics than through emulation. When you have greats such as The Punisher, Marble Madness, Mike Tyson's Punchout, and Ninja Gaiden at your fingertips (All NES), life is good.

The JNes takes that goodness and makes it better. It is by far the best Nintendo Entertatinment System(NES for short, for those uncultured)emulator I've EVAR seen. For one, it's Windows-based which is a huge plus. Older DOS-based emulators were unreliable and didn't have any neato features. The JNes also sports save states, bitmap screen shots, and Game Genie support. These are all bragable, especially the save states. Unless you were born in Canada, you can remember playing your regular Nintendo... Without being able to save on the vast majority of games... Having to beat a game in one sitting... It's freaking hard! Well, the JNes solves that problem. Good for it, huh?

Another big aspect is its reliability. I've never had any major issues with my JNes, though it has conflicted with my WinAmp in the past. It has support for almost all mappers as well. I won't try to act as if I know exactly what a mapper is, but I do know that they have to do with which games can and can't be played. To translate, this is a good thing.

Ok, in case you haven't gathered, the JNes is a superb emulator for the NES. I mean, it's freaking awesome. I have every NES game on my computer and believe me, it makes for some needed entertainment in time of extreme boredom. My only complaint is that the save state button(F5) is right next to the restore state button(F6), which can cause some unwanted situations. Of course, the newest beta version of it has fixed that problem. You can download that here.

The Stadholder gives the JNes...
The Punisher is a good game So is Punchout Ninja Gaiden!! WTF! I like Link, even though it's hard Marble Madness has a marble
Five shurikens!!! It's not really illegal, the government just has a skewed view of Constitutional interpretation. Get it!

Comments from the other gods:

Shalmdi Sez - Hmm, well first off, I would like to say that the Jnes is a good emulator, but not my favorite. I guess I am a sucker for the classics, and I would have to say the Nesticle is better. Let's face it, when I am playing Final Fantasy on my computer, I like the classic look of a DOS-based system. Plus, I found the system much more customizable and personal than the JNes. Five Shurikens, Stadholder? I think not. Also, I would like to state that this comment and the above review are of course hypothetical as we gods would NEVER do anything illegal like play hacked NES games. You believe us, right?

CHL Sez - Okay, this one wins hands down for me in the JNES/Nesticle war. First, allow me to point out that "Nesticle" sounds like "testicle." I'd rather not have someone misinterpret me and think I'm playing on my Guerilla War on my testicle. Second, for any modern day computer user, Windows support would definitely be preferred, since everyone knows that Windows hates DOS anyways. If appearance bothers you that much, make it full screen. JNES is the best, so there. And, in support to Shalmdi's statement, these reviews are based purely on second-hand experience. Someone who will remain unidentified is relaying this entire review for me, and I'm sure the case is the same for Shalmdi and Stad.

Just as a more current note about this review: While the JNes is a stellar program for playing NES roms, The Review Gods do not support, endorse, or encourage hacked console gaming. That's illegal, in a direct sort of way. Buy the real game, like I do. I own a bunch of NES games. If you don't, your bad.
