Review for 05/22/03 - The Matrix

What is the Matrix? Is it a computer-generated dream world designed to keep human beings under control in order to use their inherent ability of homeostasis to transform their heat and bio-electricity into a form of consumable power? No, it isn’t. But, it is one of the most innovative and provoking movies of all time. I will also add unique to that list of superlatives, though some will argue that the idea has been used and is overdone. Machines controlling humans... Perhaps this broad concept has been done and redone, but the articulate and systematic approach that the Matrix brings is truly unparalleled.

Ok, so I may be a little biased. But, I’m the critic, so sometimes I get that privilege. I don’t plan on going into any of the particulars of this film because I assume that if you’re reading this that you’ve seen it already. If you haven’t seen it, stop reading NOW. I’m serious. Stop reading and go watch it. Honestly, if you haven’t seen the Matrix, then you haven’t entered the 21st century like the rest of humanity. In this case, ignorance isn’t bliss.

Something I must go into is the overwhelming atmosphere in the Matrix. Nearly every setting is pervaded by the presence of murk, gloom, and overall depression. Yet, somehow the movie tactfully balances it with an absorbing story of suspense and, of course, action. The lobby scene comes to mind when I think of action in this film. This is one of those moments in a movie that makes you realize why you are watching it for the 6th time in one day. That may be a small exaggeration, (not for some) but you get the point. Oh yeah, and the lobby scene’s atmosphere is great too. You know, flying bullets and ninja moves.

Another aspect of this film that is ever present is the idea of the Matrix being a computer system. If you’ve ever taken any 2nd year algebra, you may have worked with number matrices. They are generally pointless in term of real-life application, but what is important is that they are systems. Just like the Matrix that you’re reading about now. It’s a system. An intricate system with all sorts of rules that are only vaguely addressed in the movie, probably so that the writers and producers can sit around and chuckle at the audience as they try to “decode the Matrix.” It’s sad really, how they can so easily manipulate our obviously inferior minds. Heh.

Hmmm, well, since I’m not going to seriously critique this movie, I suppose I’m done. In case you haven’t noticed, I like the Matrix. I like it because it is good. You should like it too. You should not like it because I said you should, but because it is good. If you don’t like it, you’re probably either an idiot or a Canadian. Sorry about that, but it had to be said. To sum this review up, the Matrix is freaking awesome. If you don’t agree with me, you’re wrong. Try going here if you want to read a paid critic's point of view. It’s not right, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

The Stadholder gives the Matrix...
Shuriken Shuriken again Still Shuriken Yep, you guessed it. Shuriken. They never used any shurikens in the Matrix. A pity.
5 ninja stars. Shurikens to be more exact. The Matrix deserves every single one of them.

Comments from the other gods:
Shalmdi Sez - What is there to say, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The only reason I felt I needed to post was to say that the comment about Canadians reflects only the opinions of The Stadholder and not necessarily the opinions of this web site. I mean, lets face it, the Canadians gave us...um...Canadian Bacon! Yeah...they aren't stupid...riiight.

Actually, Canada does give us one other thing, which is a place to dodge the draft. I don't know whether that's good or not, and I don't necessarily support draft dodging, but it's true. Have you noticed how we say a lot of things we end up disclaiming? I think that comes from an ultra-sensitive, ultra-legal society. Anyways, the Matrix has to be one of the coolest movies ever. Why am I saying this? Why does anyone need to say this? Stadholder, you're adding to the bandwidth by reviewing this. Jerk.
